History gives children the opportunity to step back in time, explore the past and discover how it has shaped the world we live in today. We want our children to be curious about the past, ask thoughtful questions and develop their own understanding of the people, events and changes that have shaped our world.

Using the Maestro Cornerstones Curriculum, children follow a carefully planned journey through history. They explore significant periods, events and people, making links between different times and places as their knowledge develops.

From studying their local area and the people who lived there, to exploring ancient civilisations, significant historical events and changes in Britain and the wider world, children develop an understanding of what happened, when it happened and why it mattered.

We want children to think like historians. They learn to ask questions, examine evidence, use sources and consider different viewpoints. They discover that history is not simply about remembering facts, but about finding out what happened and thinking carefully about how we know.

As children progress through school, they build a growing sense of chronology, learning how different periods connect and how people, places and societies have changed over time. They also develop the vocabulary and confidence to explain their ideas and make comparisons between the past and present.

• Pride – taking pride in our knowledge, our local history and the discoveries we make.

Most importantly, we want our children to leave primary school with a love of finding out about the past, an understanding of how history has shaped the present and the confidence to question, investigate and think for themselves.
