Reading

At Larkfield Primary school we believe that reading is an essential life skill and we are committed to enabling our children to become passionate, lifelong readers.

At the core of our reading strategy is our drive to foster a love of reading. Engaging reading areas throughout the school, encourage our children to curl up with a good book and immerse themselves in high quality texts. Visiting authors, book fairs and participation in national reading events are thoroughly enjoyed by all the children and staff.

We recognise the importance of a consistent approach to the teaching of reading and all staff are trained to deliver Sounds-Write (systematic synthetic phonics programme) and Complete Comprehension (reading comprehension) from EYFS to Year 6.

All children at Larkfield Primary have the opportunity to become fluent, confident readers that can use the reading tools taught to gain new knowledge and become independent, successful learners.

Phonics scheme: Sounds-Write

  • Sounds-Write is a linguistic phonics approach (speech to print) and a systematic synthetic phonics programme.

  • The Sounds-Write programme is validated by the Department for Education.

  • Sounds-Write is a highly structured, cumulative, multi-sensory approach to teaching reading and spelling across the whole school.

  • The four key concepts that students are taught and the three phonemic awareness skills they need to master.

  • Students are taught the Initial Code in the first year of school and cover the Extended Code and how to read Polysyllabic Words during the next two years. They consolidate this knowledge with a focus on spelling in the years beyond the first three.

  • Phonics is taught for at least 30 minutes daily in the first three years of school and Sounds-Write is used for teaching spelling in the years beyond this.

  • Parents and carers are encouraged to take the free course for parents and carers so they can support their children more effectively, and should be made aware of the Sounds-Write app. The course can be found here
